How does BBL work?

BBL (BroadBand Light) is a type of high-intensity light that sends heat into the skin. This controlled amount of heat is absorbed by the pigment cells.

The laser is designed to damage these cells to trigger the skin's immune response. Then, to repair itself, the skin gets rid of these damaged cells at the top surface, where they naturally slough off with other dead skin cells. So, during the procedure, the light energy affects the chromophores, which are the cells that absorb it. This heat destroys or changes the structure of the cells. Then, your immune cells kick in and get rid of the damaged cells, replacing them with new, healthy ones. This is how the skin gets a new lease of life, depending on what you're aiming for – lightening hyperpigmentation, getting rid of blood vessels, reducing acne inflammation and making the skin look more youthful. So, when you're recovering from a treatment for hyperpigmentation, you'll see the treated areas darken first, and then they'll gradually get smoother and brighter, looking more youthful.

NIR laser theory

NIR (near infrared light) is between visible light and infrared light. Its penetration depth in the skin is the deepest among all lights and lasers, much deeper than IPL.

NIR (Near-Infrared) treatment is an advanced laser treatment that offers natural, painless, and non-invasive rejuvenation and regeneration for the facial skin. This innovative procedure utilizes intense laser light to instantly refresh the skin, erase signs of fatigue, and restore radiance to the face.

The NIR laser is great for treating skin because it can get into the skin and make it produce more collagen and elastin. These are the things that make your skin look tight and young. The laser heats the skin to about 40 to 44 degrees Celsius, which makes the skin produce more collagen and elastin. Most importantly, the surface of the skin doesn't get damaged, so you can use it all year round.

The NIR laser stimulates the synthesis of collagen and elastin, effectively tightening relaxed collagen fibers, which make the skin tighter and more youthful.

In clinical treatment, the combination of BBL laser and infrared can achieve better skin lightening and rejuvenation effects. And there is no need to worry about the risk of burns, it is safe and effective.

Technical advantages of near infrared light therapy

1.Selected wavelength

Near   infrared light waves use near-infrared technology, with a selected spectrum range of 900~1600nm, and a peak concentrated at 1300nm infrared light waves. The target tissue is the water molecules in the skin. Because NIR infrared light penetrates deeper than visible pulsed light, it can penetrate the epidermis and reach the superficial to middle layers of the dermis.

2.Dual mode

Fixed-point mode: Intense pulsed light fixed-point operation, local strong stimulation, immediate contraction of dermal collagen fibers, while promoting dermal collagen proliferation and rearrangement, thereby filling the gap of contracted and lost collagen, increasing the thickness and density of the dermis, tightening the skin, and improving skin elasticity.

3.Sliding mode

Unique sliding mode, uniform volume heating, the photothermal effect generated by NIR near-infrared light, enhances vascular function, improves circulation, and at the same time increases collagen and elastic fibers to maintain skin smoothness and transparency, and promote brightening of skin tone.

Effect advantages of near-infrared light

1. Effectively stimulate the regeneration and remodeling of collagen

Can reach the shallow to middle layers of the dermis (emphasis: only when it reaches this depth can it stimulate remodeling), produce immediate and continuous skin contraction, improve skin texture and fineness, increase skin permeability, and achieve skin brightening and firming effects.

2. Non-traumatic

The biggest feature is that it is non-invasive and painless.

3. Rapid treatment, no time wasted

NIR near-infrared light treatment is fast and can be completed during lunch time, it is a real lunch beauty project.

The therapeutic effect of NIR milk light

NIR technology can effectively treat the following areas:

– Chin

– Forehead

– Neck

– Eye area

– Full face and neck

– Body areas such as the abdomen, thighs, upper arms, and breasts.

1. Improve dull skin color

It can promote the contraction of collagen fibers in the dermis of the skin, making the skin firm and white. It is suitable for people with congenital dull skin, dark skin, etc., as well as people with dull skin due to long-term ultraviolet radiation, untimely sun protection and care as a daily maintenance.

2. Shrink pores

Long-term makeup makes pores clogged, and incomplete cleansing can easily make pores enlarged. NIR can promote collagen regeneration and shrink pores.

3. Delicate skin texture

NIR can improve congenital rough skin texture and rough and dull skin caused by improper acquired skin care.

4.Skin tightening

After the age of 25, the skin becomes noticeably loose, and fine lines and dry lines begin to form. NIR can make loose and aging skin tighter.

Fractional light spot handle of NIR laser

1. Efficiency: Honeycomb instant transmission technology, strong energy penetration, quickly solve skin problems.

2. Safety & Comfort: NIR milk light adopts cooling mechanism to reduce pain and discomfort during treatment, painless treatment process, avoid thermal damage, improve customer comfort.

3. Fractional light spot handle, relieves patients’ pain and avoids thermal damage.

4. Microsecond cell light technology, reduces the thermal relaxation time of target tissue and inhibits the formation of chloasma.

What exactly happens during BBL treatment?

During your initial BBL consultation, a dermatologist will examine your skin to determine which areas to target. Then they’ll create a treatment plan involving multiple pulsed light therapy sessions.

BBL treatments usually last around 30 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area.

During the procedure, the physician will apply a cooling gel to the treatment area and possibly a topical anesthetic. You’ll wear safety shields, goggles, or glasses to protect your eyes.

You may experience sensations, pulses, and mild pain. Your skin may feel slightly warm and appear slightly red, swollen, or sunburned.

You can expect to see visible changes to your skin within a few days or weeks of your first BBL treatment. As you continue treatments, you will notice more significant changes.

Preparing for a BBL procedure

Before your BBL treatment, you need to prepare your skin. It’s important that your skin is not tanned. Avoid direct sunlight or tanning beds for 4 to 6 weeks before and after each session.

Don’t use sunless tanner for at least 2 weeks before your treatment. For at least 1 week before BBL, avoid waxing, chemical peels, and products containing retinol, salicylic acid, or glycolic acid.

Talk with your doctor to make sure it’s safe to stop taking any prescribed medications that cause photosensitivity, which is extreme sensitivity to UV light. If you have frequent cold sores, your doctor may prescribe an antiviral medication a few days before your session.

After BBL treatment

You’ll be able to get home from your appointment on your own and resume your daily activities. For at least 48 hours following BBL treatment, avoid anything that causes sweating or flushing. This includes exercise, hot temperatures, and saunas. Refrain from consuming alcohol and spicy foods.

Is BBL effective?

You can expect to see noticeable changes to your skin within a few days. Blemishes and blood vessels will usually clear up within a few weeks.

Within 2 weeks of your first treatment, your skin may feel smoother and appear more even and bright. You may see fewer discolorations, fine lines, and pores.

The physician performing the procedure will recommend how many BBL treatments you’ll need. They’ll base the number of treatments on your:

  • current skin type

  • skin condition

  • desired results

Usually, you’ll need to have three to six BBL treatments spaced a few weeks apart. After that, dermatolgists generally advise having at least two treatments per year to maintain and improve your results.

Several studies point to the effectiveness of BBL in improving the appearance of skin. A small 2019 studyTrusted Source examined the effects of 5 BBL treatments every 2 weeks and found that BBL is a safe and mildly effective method for reducing enlarged facial pores.

Another small 2019 studyTrusted Source found that three BBL treatment settings were effective in tightening skin. All three techniques showed improvements in zygomatic (cheekbone) wrinkles, nasolabial folds, and marionette lines.

Research from 2020Trusted Source suggests that BBL safely and effectively improves the appearance of senile purpura and prevents new lesions. BBL treatments increase the thickness of your epidermis (outer layer of skin) and improve collagen and elasticity, which enhances the skin’s structure.

Are there any possible side effects?

After your BBL treatment, you may feel burning, redness, and warmth that’s similar to a sunburn. This discomfort usually only lasts a few hours, but it can continue for a few days. To relieve swelling and discomfort, apply a cold compress to the affected area for 10 to 20 minutes at a time.

In the week following your first treatment, you may notice pigment coming to the surface of your skin. It’s also common to experience redness, peeling, and swelling. Dark spots and freckles may darken before fading and flaking off over time, usually within 1 to 3 weeks.

After BBL, avoid:

  • exfoliants

  • topical acne treatments

  • scented skin care products

When washing the affected area, use lukewarm water and avoid hot or cold water. Don’t use a loofah or scrub your skin. Gently apply nonirritating skincare products and avoid scratching, rubbing, or picking your skin.

Because your skin’s melanin absorbs the light energy in a BBL treatment, the procedure is safest for light, untanned skin. People with darker skin tones containing more melanin are more likely to experience burning, scarring, or hyperpigmentation.

What happens during the NIR treatment?

Before we start the treatment, we apply a cooling gel to your skin.

We then pass the NIR handpiece over the targeted areas of your skin.

This heats up your skin until it reaches a working temperature of between 39 and 42 degrees Centigrade. We maintain this temperature for a further 10 to 15 minutes.

Depending on the size of the area we are treating, the whole procedure should be completed in about 30 to 40 minutes.

Is the near infrared (NIR) treatment painful?

You should not feel any pain during NIR treatment.

You will feel a warm sensation, similar to being on a sun bed, which at most might be slightly uncomfortable.

The handpiece has a built-in cooling system to prevent the surface layer of your skin becoming too warm.

We can apply more cooling gel, though, if you do start to feel uncomfortable.

Are there any side effects?

Because the treatment involves heating your skin to a relatively high temperature, you should expect some redness afterwards.

You may also have some mild swelling, but this and the redness should settle down within a few hours (24 hours at most).

Other than this, there is no downtime and you can continue with your day immediately after treatment.

How soon will I see the results?

You should notice your skin looking firmer immediately after the treatment. This is partly due to the slight swelling that is a normal side effect of NIR treatment.

When this swelling has gone down (within 24 hours), the treated skin will feel smoother and you will see some improvement.

However, the most significant results happen gradually over the following 2 or 3 months. In this period, the treatment result becomes more visible as the skin forms new collagen.

How many treatments will I need?

Some patients have achieved their expected results after only one treatment.

Most people, though, benefit from a course of 3 to 6 treatments, at intervals of up to 3 weeks.

A few patients may need up to 8 treatments, depending on their skin condition and expectations.

How long do the results last?

NIR treatment can help to reduce some of the visible signs of ageing skin.

We normally expect the results from the treatment to last for a year at the least, and more often up to 2 years.

NIR can’t, however, completely halt the ageing process, and you may continue to need top-up treatments to maintain results.

FAQ of BBL NIR machine
Q: What do the broad band lights mean?

A: BBL (Broadband Light) is a powerful upgrade of IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and is also recognized as the “gold standard” treatment for whitening skin.

BBL emits broad-spectrum photothermal energy (high-intensity short-pulsed light), which instantly passes through the epidermis and directly acts on the pigmentation and red blood vessels of the skin, producing a thermal effect, targeting and destroying pigment cells, while producing new cells and promoting collagen production, thereby repelling dark spots on the skin and restoring skin elasticity and vitality.

Q: BBL laser vs ipl: Which One Is Better?
A: IPL and BBL devices are based on the same intense pulsed light technology.
The BroadBand Light system is a more advanced device that can provide more dramatic results with fewer sessions.
Patients with mild rosacea, hyperpigmentation, or acne may achieve similar results with both treatments. However, patients with more pronounced signs of photoaging may do better with BBL laser.
With advanced cooling capabilities, increased safety, more customizable options, and the ability to rejuvenate the skin at a molecular level, BBL is the gold standard in skin rejuvenation using light.
